Oh Malabrigo or should I say Mmmmmmmalabrigo. Certainly soft as buttah but a bitch to wind. I had to keep pausing while winding because the yarn kept sticking to itself. Also, as the yarn is so soft, I’ve to wonder how well the scarf will hold up. I’ll be hesitant to use this for a sweater. Perhaps knitting at a smaller gauge might help.

The pattern is bloody fantastic for a quick gift which is just what I need as this scarf is supposed to be a gift. Knit in a worsted weight, it certainly went a lot faster than my first One Row Handspun Scarf which was done in DK weight.

Pattern: One Row Handspun Scarf

Size: ~ 70″ x 4.5″

Yarn: 1 x Malabrigo Yarn Merino Worsted in Fucsia

Needle: 5.0mm

I cast on only 22 stitches for a narrower scarf and slipped the first stitch purlwise with yarn in front for a neat edge.

They’re not kidding when they say Malabrigo grows. The scarf was about 59″ x 4.5″ pre-blocked. After giving it a soak and laying it out to dry flat, the scarf was about 70″ x 4.5″. While I certainly like the extra length, I prefer the thick squishiness of the pre-blocked scarf.

I also have this problem with the cast-on and bind-off edges being wider than the rest of the scarf (happens with most scarves I knit). How do you remedy this?

Wow. Looks like I haven’t posted in forever. I lost my knitting mojo for a while but I’m now slowly getting it back. I love knitting but living in a tropical country where I’ll never get to wear beautiful hand-knit wool sweaters gets a bit discouraging some time. Most of the time, I’ll just substitute with plant-based yarn but we all know that doesn’t work all the time and it’s just not the same.

Right. Enough with the woe cake and on to the FO. Again, this is a scarf I knitted for charity. Like the One Row Handspun Scarf, it’s wonderful mindless commute knitting but it doesn’t go as fast.

Pattern: Scrappy Lengthwise Scarf

Size: ~ 60″ x 5.75″

Yarn: Slightly less than 1 x Spotlight Basics 8 Ply Acrylic

Needle: 5.0mm

The original pattern has the scarf knitted lengthwise. That wasn’t very portable for me so I knitted it widthwise. I cast on 30 stitches and just knitted till the yarn ran out.

Anyone who’s interested in knitting this pattern should take note to use a needle size larger than the one normally used for the yarn.

I really like the woven look of this pattern. Must knit one for myself!

My first finished object in 2008! All blocked and with ends weaved in! Yay!

Yarn: 1 x Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool in Bristol Red

Needles: 5.00mm

Measurements: 7 inches wide, 58.5 inches long (after blocking)

I did a total of 27 repeats with a few yards to spare. The pattern was simple to follow but requires some concentration. I had to unknit a few times because I wasn’t paying attention. I also found it impossible to memorise the pattern. Blocking did help to open up the lace a little.

Branching Out pre-blocked:

The yarn does feel wonderful even though I’m a little sensitive to wool. The silk content probably helps some but there’s still a tiny hint of a prick for me.

Also, perhaps because it’s lace, it dried amazingly fast in our humid weather.

This is definitely a pattern I will knit again. I think the scarf makes a great gift!

I started on this pattern previously but never finished it because I didn’t think it look lacy enough. I cast on with a hank of gorgeous red Silky Wool a few days ago and have done 12 repeats so far. It’s looking a little wonky so far so I’m hoping blocking will transform it from a wonky looking scarf to an amazing looking lacy one. Oh, I love, love, love the yarn. Hope to finish this by this week so it’ll be my first FO in 2008!

Previously, I started the Palindrome scarf with Knit Picks‘ Shine Worsted. I’ve since changed my mind and plan to use the Shine Worsted for another project. I was still keen on knitting the scarf so I used the Spotlight Basics Delight yarn I had lying around since I still had 4 balls of it. So far, I’ve done 15 repeats and have almost used up 1 ball. 4 balls of the yarn should knit me a scarf about 60″. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to block the scarf when I’m done? Eh, we’ll see how it goes.

Also, I bought Charmed Knits the other day and kind of regretted it. Even though I’m a Harry Potter fan, there wasn’t much in it that appealed to me.

I’ve started yet another knit project! This time, it’s Knitty’s Branching Out in Knit Picks‘ Merino Style in Frost. I’ve only done 3 repeats so far and I love the pattern so, so much. If this is what lace knitting is like, I can add yet another addiction to my list. The scarf definitely needs to be be blocked once it’s done so this will be my first time blocking a lace-like project. We’ll see how that goes.

I’m already planning my second Branching Out in more yummy and thinner yarn!

Opportunity Knits has been kind enough to nominate me with the Rockin’ Girl Blogger award. Thanks!

I’ve previously received this award on my other blog, About Every Little Thing and posted it in my I’m FABULOUS post so I’m reusing the picture that I tinkered with.

After frogging the short-lived Sweet Pea Shawl, I stuffed the yarn into a basket and left it there to languish forgotten. Well, not for long anyway. I took it out to start on the Irish Hiking Scarf and realised that the yarn was in one big tangled mess. I spent half a day untangling it and then winding it by hand into a centre pull ball with the how to wind a center pull ball tutorial by Bird’s Nest Knits. I sure wish I’ve a ball winder!

My one tiny gripe with the Irish Hiking Scarf pattern was that it wasn’t reversible so when I chanced upon Silver’s Palindrome Scarf (a reversible cable scarf), I cast on right away. There’s even a matching Palindrome Hat which I plan on making, of course.

I’m a terribly slow knitter so I’ve only made a few repeats so far. This is also my first cable project and I think it shows. The cables look exceptionally bad in cotton since cotton is supposed to show stitches (and mistakes!) really clearly, I think. Oh well, I didn’t know what to do with the yarn and it’s good practice anyway.

As much as I love how crocheted shells look, I can never get mine to look right. The first stitch of the shell always looks awful. But I think this scarf looks great on the whole, well, as long as you don’t look too closely anyway. Merino Style was such a soft and squishy yarn to work with but it was a little splitty. Still, it did feel nice next to my skin.

I love how the scarf looked like a flower when it’s balled up.

The Shimmer Chevron Scarf was the very first project I started when I first picked up knitting. Ha! That sounded like something that happened when dinosaurs roamed the earth but was actually just a couple weeks back. Having a short attention span meant that I got bored after… OOH SHINY! Sorry, where was I? Oh yeah, I got bored after 10 inches of the scarf and started on Cricket’s Technicolor Techno-Cozy which turned out to be the type of seaming disaster that only I am capable of. Also, the wool I used for the scarf? Didn’t smell like flowers and candy. I hated it. Anyway, I will finish it. Some day.

The colours of the scarf remind me of ice-cream which explains why I often have the munchies while I was working on it. Also, the next time I work on a scarf, I’m choosing a pattern that’s reversible, i.e. both sides are fit to be seen.
